My Grandad was in both world
wars. I think he deserves far more than the medal s he was awarded
even though he has passed away now.. This page is for him and all
the others who give their lives for our freedom.

My Grandad
He was one of the last to
leave the beaches of Dunkirk. These are telegrams he sent to my
grandmother - the first one says 'safe and well arrived in England
today' telling of his safe return from Dunkirk.

If you would like to read an excellent set
of books about the war, the fear, and the treatment of those damaged
- I would recommend the Ghost Road
Trilogy by Pat Barker.

"In Flanders Fields"
by Lieut.-Col. John McCrae
In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe;
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, through poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
Col. McCrae was a member of
the first Canadian contingent.
He died in France
on January 28, 1918
after four years of service
on the western front.
